Single head, double head or cutting center?

Three automation levels for cutting aluminum and PVC profiles compared. A practical guide based on production volume, flexibility needs and budget.
Single head, double head or cutting center?

Profile cutting is the first stage of the production process and directly affects finished product quality. OMC Machinery offers three types of machines for cutting aluminum and PVC profiles — single head cutting machines, double head cutting machines and automatic cutting centers — each designed for a different production level. This guide compares them to help you identify the most effective solution based on your volumes, profile types and automation level.

Single head cutting machines

Single head cutting machines perform one cut at a time on a single profile. The operator positions the profile, starts the cut and removes the piece. Tilting can be manual, pneumatic or electronic depending on the model, with blades from 400 to 700 mm. They are suited for flexible machining on different profiles, small batches, custom operations and workshops where the production volume does not justify a more complex machine. Main strengths: low investment, operational simplicity, ability to handle special cuts (pyramidal, ascending). Main limitations: longer cycle times on repetitive operations, need for manual repositioning for each cut.

Double head cutting machines

Double head cutting machines perform two simultaneous cuts on the same profile — typically at 45° for window frames. Two independent cutting units work simultaneously, halving cycle time compared to a single head. CNC models with electronic tilting allow quick angle changes and cutting list import. They are suited for medium-to-high window production, where speed and repeatability are priorities. Main strengths: time savings, cutting precision and consistency between the two ends, 4.0 integration. Main limitations: higher investment, less suited for occasional or single-piece work. For a detailed comparison between models, see the double head cutting machine comparison.

Automatic cutting centers

Cutting centers automate the entire cutting cycle: the operator loads the bar, the machine positions, cuts and unloads the pieces autonomously, following a programmed cutting list. The Futura 500 handles multi-angle cuts (45° left, 90°, 45° right and intermediate angles) in continuous cycle; the Squadra 450-500 is designed for 90° fixed-angle serial cutting. They are suited for high-volume serial production of crossbars, uprights and accessories, where cutting list optimization reduces waste and eliminates the need for a dedicated operator. Main strengths: unattended continuous cycle, waste reduction, repeatable precision. Main limitations: highest investment in the range, less flexibility for one-off operations.

How to choose

Production volume

Low or variable volumes → single head. Medium-high continuous volumes → double head. High volumes with repetitive cutting lists → cutting center.

Profile type

Large sections (pergolas, curtain walls) → single head with 700 mm blade or Mammut double head. Standard windows → double head with 450-550 mm blade. Serial accessories and crossbars → cutting center.

Budget

Limited → manual single head (TR 450-500). Medium → double head with electropneumatic tilting (Lince 550, Puma 450). Higher → CNC Electra double head or Futura 500 cutting center.

Automation level

Fully manual → single head. CNC with cutting list import → double head Electra or Puma. Fully automatic unattended → cutting center.
